Description:
Medium sized water side bird, actions similar to any dipper. From Brown by white throat and breast contrasting with brown belly; also has brown head and nape merging into blackish-slate of mantle, wings and tail. Juvenile has greyer coloration to upperparts, without prominent spotting.
Distribution:
Locally common resident in higher elevations all across Gilgit-Baltistan, except for Ghanche. Usually found in fast-flowing, clear-water rocky streams and rivers with riffles and exposed rocks in high alpine grass and scrub meadows, up to 4200m.
Behavior:
Forages on rocks and stones on riverbed, also on wetted surface of rocks above water; sometimes on riverbank among tree roots and leaves. Feeds mostly by plunging into swift-flowing water; wades in shallow water. Feeds on freshwater insects and larvae. Principal prey mayfly and stonefly nymphs, and larvae of caddis flies, also dragonfly nymphs and fly larvae.
